Writing “Good and Useful” is my creative exercise in trying to communicate ideas and see if I succeed… or fail and learn from it. Publishing and being open to feedback are good entrepreneurial (and life!) exercises, so its a Good and Useful activity for me.
I’m interested in a lot of different things and have a pretty diverse range of activities that are all part of my work, so my “job” isn’t easily recognizable, nor does it fit a particular category or job title. Writing about what I’m up to, what I observe, and what I find interesting does a few things to communicate about and clarify my work:
It helps me refine ideas. The process of communicating or teaching a concept is the ultimate test of mastery.
People I work with (portfolio founders, fund managers, business operators, community members) get a view into the range of things I’m engaged with and can tap me to bring more to whatever we collaborate on.
People I don’t know yet can find out what I’m about and connect to see if I might be of help to them.
I think connections and correlations between seemingly unrelated things are really exciting and interesting. When I find those things, I want to share and see if others see them too, if they can add to them, or have interesting objections or arguments against them.
Finally, one of my goals is to increase diversity in entrepreneurship, technology, and venture capital. I’m sharing my experience as a woman in tech and venture, and my experience working for underrepresented groups, to give more access and put more examples out there.
